Our work, in the detail
See the space.
Not just the promise.
Choosing a builder is a big decision. Take a closer look at our work, from the outside to the spaces within. Every photo here is from a Waterfield project.

The exterior
More space, still your home.
Brickwork, a pitched roof and wide bifold doors. An extension that feels part of the house, not an afterthought.

The living space
Open up your everyday.
Natural light, room to spread out and a connection to the garden. The difference you feel long after the building work is done.

Behind the finish
Real work. Not just the reveal.
A look inside a build in progress, from the rooflights and plastering to the doors that open the space up.
What could your home become?
Let's explore it at a free site visit. No finished plans needed to start a conversation.
The people behind Waterfield
A father and son team.
Bricklayers by trade.
Waterfield Construction is led by a father and son team with a practical background in bricklaying. That trade background is part of the business behind the house extensions you see here.
Choosing an extension builder is about the people as well as the finished work. A free site visit is a chance to get to know Waterfield, talk through your ideas and ask questions before deciding what comes next.
A home with more possibilities
The right extension.
For the way you live.
A bigger kitchen. A room to work in. Space for a growing family. Start with what you need your home to do, then explore how an extension could make it happen.
You don't need to know which type yet.Tell us what isn't working in your home. That's a good place to start your free site visit.
Rear extensionsFor a bigger kitchen and a home that opens onto the garden.
Extend out from the back of your house to create room for cooking, dining and spending time together. Rooflights and wider doors can bring daylight further into the space.
Worth thinking about: how much garden you want to keep, and how the new room connects to your existing kitchen.
Side & side return extensionsMake more of the space beside your home.
A narrow strip beside the house can sometimes make a big difference inside. A side extension can widen a kitchen or provide space for a utility room, downstairs bathroom or home office.
Worth thinking about: boundary positions, access to the back garden and neighbouring windows.
Wraparound extensionsRethink the layout, not just the room size.
Combining a side and rear extension gives you the opportunity to reshape the ground floor. It can make space for an open plan kitchen and living area while keeping practical rooms separate.
Worth thinking about: the structural work needed to open up existing walls, and how to bring light into the centre of the house.
Double storey extensionsMore living space downstairs. More possibilities upstairs.
Building over two floors can add a bedroom or bathroom alongside extra ground floor space. Whether it suits your home depends on its structure, the available space and planning requirements.
Worth thinking about: the roofline, the upstairs layout and the effect on neighbouring homes.
Every house is different. Feasibility, planning permission and building regulations need to be considered for your specific property.

Big questions.
Straightforward answers.
Planning a house extension in Chelmsford or Essex? Here are a few things worth knowing before you start.
How much will my house extension cost?
The size is only part of the picture. Ground conditions, access, structural work and the kitchen or bathroom finishes can all affect the price. A free site visit lets us discuss your priorities and what needs to be included. Detailed drawings and specifications may be needed before the build can be fully priced.
Will I need planning permission?
Some house extensions can be built under permitted development rights, but there are limits and conditions. Others need a planning application. Your property, previous extensions and any local restrictions all matter, so check the specific proposal with your designer and local planning authority before starting. Building regulations are a separate requirement, even where planning permission is not needed.
How long does an extension take?
There are two stages to allow for: getting the design and approvals ready, then the construction itself. The build time depends on the scale, structural changes, access and finishes. Ask for a programme based on your actual plans rather than a generic estimate, and allow for factors such as weather and material availability.
Can we stay at home while the work is done?
Sometimes, but it depends on the work and whether safe access, essential services and a usable kitchen and bathroom can be maintained. Opening up the existing house can be particularly disruptive. Discuss children, pets, working from home and any accessibility needs early so temporary arrangements can be considered before work begins.
Do I need drawings before I get in touch?
No. You can start with an idea of what you want to change and arrange a free site visit. If you already have drawings, planning decisions or structural information, have them ready for the discussion. The information needed to start a conversation is different from the detail needed to price and build an extension.
Your home might raise a different question.
